Position Overview: Athens Research is currently seeking a senior protein chemist (PC) to lead one of our production teams responsible for protein purification and characterization. These teams have full operational responsibility for one of our key protein families, providing the highest quality protein products in support of both academic researchers and commercial customers around the world. This proven leader and qualified candidate will use their experience and knowledge of proteins and purification techniques to lead, teach, troubleshoot, and continuously improve their operations.
Description of responsibilities:
- Lead a production team of junior protein chemists and technicians to purify and characterize target proteins and antibodies
- Design and modify purification protocols to meet customer requirements
- Perform and/or oversee standard operations as described in relevant protein purification procedures. Including the following, as a minimum:
- Column Chromatography via AKTA System and LPLC
- Upstream process separation techniques such as homogenization, cell lysis, and centrifugation.
- Sample analysis via Chromatogram, UV Spectroscopy and SDS PAGE.
- Perform QC Assays: Including, but not limited to Western Blot, Activity Assays, Inhibitor, and Protein Concentration Assays.
- Perform experimental work to develop new purification protocols and optimizing of existing protocols.
- Work on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors, and exercises critical thinking skills to determine appropriate conclusion and follow-up action.
- Create, manage, and adhere to good documentation practices
- Comply with all safety guidelines.
Education
- B.S. in Biology, Chemistry or equivalent with 5+ years’ protein purification experience
- M.S. in Biology, Chemistry or equivalent with 3+ years’ protein purification experience
- Or an appropriate combination of education and protein purification experience
Experience:
- Developing and leading production work teams
- Background in column chromatography and related purification techniques
- Strong background in protein biochemistry, antibody and protein purification
Work Environment:
- Must be able to work with different types of chemicals (acids, bases, solvents, toxic Chemicals, etc.).
- Must be able to work with human and animal biological fluids and tissues.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn when applicable.
- Prolonged periods of sitting or standing may be required at times.
- Must be able to lift to 35 lbs. at times
